Eastside Cities: Kirkland

Just across Lake Washington from Seattle, Kirkland is a big-city escape that invites exploration of its tree-lined boulevards, hidden lanes of boutiques, self-styled restaurants, and prominent outdoor sculptures. Panoramic views of Lake Washington, Seattle's skyline, and the Olympic Mountains also draw people to this unique locale, where 25% of the waterfront has been preserved by the city.

Kirkland's earliest industries included boat building and the state's first wool mill. Today, the economy is comprised of small businesses, corporate headquarters, light industrial and manufacturing, and a growing number of high-tech and home-based businesses.

Downtown Kirkland continues to develop, attracting both new businesses and residents. Condos, many with Lake Washington views are available, as are homes in a variety of architectural styles and sizes. Surrounding neighborhoods, like nearby Rose Hill, offer the convenience of access with reasonably priced older homes.

The Bridal Trails neighborhood, in southeast Kirkland, surrounds a 482-acre wooded preserve and features homes on large lots, many of which accommodate the area's 400+ horses. At the opposite end of town, the Totem Lake neighborhood includes large retail centers, the city's main hospital, medical buildings, and car dealerships.

Juanita, in northwest Kirkland, boasts a new, mixed-use complex with apartments, condos, and retail. Surrounding the complex, established pocket and beach communities offer availability and affordability. Juanita Beach, a popular recreation area, is currently being redeveloped.

Kirkland is a delight for walkers, shoppers, and diners. Restaurants offer a medley of culinary experiences. The seasonal Farmers Market features fresh produce, arts and handcrafted goods. Art galleries, stylish furniture and decorative arts stores, designer consignment stores, specialty boutiques, and bridal shops provide eclectic shopping options.

Cultural enthusiasts will enjoy Kirkland's ballet, live theater, and choral performances at the Kirkland Performance Center, as well as its art galleries and dozens of public art installations. The Kirkland Arts Center offers exhibits, classes, and workshops. Heritage Hall, a stop on the walking tour of historic buildings and vintage architecture, dates to the 1880s.

Median Sold Prices 2007: Homes $590,000; Condos $326,000
